Medications that can cause diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is a common side effect of medicines, both prescription and non-prescription. They include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Antacids
  • Proton pump inhibitors  (medicines used for heartburn and acid reflux)
  • Chemotherapy drugs

Many antibiotics in particular cause diarrhoea. Often the diarrhoea is mild and will clear up without treatment. However, if you think a medicine you are taking is causing diarrhoea, contact your health care professional.
